How to Network as a Recent College Graduate

How to Network as a Recent College Graduate New to the real world? Feeling a little dumbfounded as to how to get anywhere or do anything in the job market? Well, that is where networking comes in. Networking is a tool used by everyone, but its particularly useful and important for fresh post-grads who desperately want to break into the career world. It is very easy to feel out of place doing this, however. Youre so used to being a student and having the university constantly hand you opportunities. Of course, you always felt comfortable taking advantage of those opportunities because you had the comfort of being a student at that school to back you up. But now that youre away from campus and all on your own, you dont have that sort of camaraderie to associate yourself with anymore and therefore may feel slightly intimidated or insecure approaching such networking opportunities. These feelings are completely expected due to the infamously difficult transition youre going through yet, you must overcome these irrational fears and put yourself out there. Landing any sort of professional opportunity is extremely hard, so it should be a give-in that youre certainly not going to accomplish it by just sitting at home, sending out the occasional resum. To succeed in this journey, a substantial amount of extra work is going to be required, which takes us back to the concept of networking. There are plenty of different ways to go about networking and you should make use of as many of them as you can. First off, you must re-evaluate your feelings of detachment from your university. Maybe you are no longer a student there, but you are now an alum, which is just as strong a connection. You can utilize this relationship with your school just as much as you did when you were still enrolled. Being an alum comes with tons of perks, such as alumni events and clubs. Attend some of these and you will meet tons of people of all ages. In one way or another, you are bound to come across at least a few significant connections that can lead you in a direction youd like to go. You have every reason to be at these various meet-ups, so there is no need to feel any anxiety toward them. This is still your school, so be a part of it and reach out to the community within it. Next: always, always, always follow up with past supervisors. This is not necessarily in reference to your boss at your old part-time job, but the people who oversaw your work at former internships, or other upstanding organizations you may have been a part of in college, such as the student government or school newspaper. For the latter, youd be checking in with students you worked with who are now graduated as well to see what theyre up to you never know where they might be! But in regards to your past internships, get in touch with those supervisors right away. Odds are these are the closest opportunities youve had to real career-like experiences, so make the most of those relationships and suggest to meet with these people. This is a great chance to see if there are any openings for full-time positions that the supervisor may think you would be a great fit for, either at their company or someone elses. Even if they dont have an answer for you on the spot, you have now reminded t hem who you are and what you are doing, so you will hopefully be on their minds the next time they do hear of an opening. Whoever you are reconnecting with, there is always a possibility they will know of something, or at least know of someone else who knows something. Its the classic six degrees of separation rule that will help you more often than not. The joining and connecting doesnt stop with places and people you already know get out there and try out new clubs and organizations. Volunteer, take a fun class, sign up for a team sport at the gym. Do things that interest you that will allow you to have fun as well as continue to meet people. Not only will you increase your chances of networking, you may make a few friends along the way also. The common factor that you must keep in mind throughout all of this communicating, however, is to work your field of interest into the conversation at some point. Obviously, youre not going to make any networking success if you never bring up your career aspirations or experience. But by no means do you want to bluntly come off as a kid saying, I want a job, can you get me a job? so be natural and mature as you go about this. These opportunities are usually brought to your attention when you least expect to hear about them. Finally, when youre not practicing the networking magic directly with people, be persistent and confident when reaching out to companies. If you really love a certain business and would sincerely love to be a part of it, send them a note just expressing that interest and attach your resum with the intention of them just keeping it on file incase anything ever opens up (unless, however, the company specifically instructs people not to contact them for these purposes). As long as you arent obnoxious and repeatedly bothersome about it, they should respect your initiative and appreciate knowing that someone genuinely wants to work for them. Just like with your other networking subjects, these people will now have you on their mind or at least on file and may come to you first when a desired position becomes available. All in all, this whole process is mainly about the effort you make. The more you reach out and try, the better chances youll have of grabbing a coveted job position before someone else. Do more than the average job seeker would and youll soon find yourself dominating as a young professional.

What to Know About College-Level English

What to Know About College-Level English In college, theres typically a greater variety of English classes. Students should know that college-level English explores subjects both narrower and deeper than what they may have experienced in high school. If you are an aspiring English major, writer, or simply looking to improve your reading and writing skills, heres what you can anticipate about college-level English: 1. College-level English emphasizes critical thinking In college-level English courses, theres more of a focus on critical thinking, both in the way you read, annotate, and interpret texts, and in the way you write. In general, college-level English moves away from formulaic structures, like the five-paragraph essay, and asks you to consider the nuances and complexities of an argument. Youll likely have fewer exams and tests than you did in high school, and instead have more papers, essays, and research projectspossibly even presentations. Your final project could likely be a 10-15-page paper where you explore and develop an argument of your own choice, often backed with texts youve read from the course or outside research. [RELATED: Top 10 Essay Editing Tips] 2. Writing courses versus literature courses College-level English departments offer different kinds of English courses; the two most common categories are literature and writing. Literature courses will have you read published texts, and your writing will also center around these texts. You can often find courses on a variety of subjects, such as: poetry fiction nonfiction specific time periods or eras movements geographical regions Writing courses will focus more directly on improving your own writing (even though this is a byproduct of taking a literature course!), which can range from analytical writing all the way to creative writing. The former will help you develop your rhetorical skills and how you logically put together an argument, and the latter will often be in the form of workshops, where you can receive and give feedback on poems, stories, and so on. 3. College-level English provides options to carve your own path If you end up becoming an English major, sometimesdepending on your schoolyou can choose a specialization within the major, or you may just work toward a general English degree if the former isnt offered. Either way, you can likely carve your own path, taking courses that interest you in terms of movements, regions, and so on, which isnt always the case in other departments where a more formalized structure may be in place (it always depends on the school at hand, however). If youre not sure what courses to take, ask an English professor you trust, your academic advisor, or other peers in your program for recommendations. [RELATED: What I Wish I Knew Before My First College Class] 4. College-level English offers interdisciplinary studies A great benefit about college-level English is how it can tie in so seamlessly with other subjects and fields. Many English classes are cross-listed, perhaps with gender studies, cultural studies, philosophy, art, and more. Take advantage of these opportunities to explore a side interest, or look to see how your interests might intersect in a specific course. Taking these kinds of courses can help you learn about how you might want to use your English skills in the future, whether in a career or in further schooling. 5. Readings and conferences Many colleges and universities often bring in writers and authors throughout the year for readings, seminars, book studies, and lectures. These are great opportunities to meet with active, successful writers, to hear about their processes and their career journeys, to network, and to simply be inspired by work that is being put out in the world now. Keep a lookout for conferences as wellyour college English department is likely to host a graduate student English conference that youre welcome to attend, and it may cover a variety of topics that interest you. [RELATED: What to Know About College-Level Math] College-level English is a different beast from high school, one that will require more of your effort as a student, but it will also challenge you to become a better writer and thinker. Dont forget to visit your English professors during office hours, as they can help steer you in the right direction if you feel cloudy about your writing, projects, or future. 4 Essential Classic Rock Guitar Solos That Will Make You a Better Player

4 Essential Classic Rock Guitar Solos That Will Make You a Better Player Megan L. Learning to play other peoples guitar solos is a great way to begin learning to write your own! Guitar teacher  Nils B.  shares his tips to learning four classic rock solos so you can develop your technique An essential part of every musicians development is to imitate those who have already mastered their instrument.  After settling on a song, give it a couple of close listens (preferably on headphones or a decent stereo), pick up a good transcription, then learn the rhythm parts, while analyzing the chord progressions and any distinctive rhythmical features. Then start learning the solo, phrase by phrase, while determining the relationship of each note with the chord thats being played, as well as the key of the song.  Also try listening carefully to the guitar tones, and be conservative with the amount of gain or overdrive when trying to copy these. Among other drawbacks, too much overdrive tends to hide your mistakes. Once you are able to play along with the original (or a backing track if you can find one), try recording yourself, and pay close attention to the details, such as timing, and bending accuracy.  And as a final step, once youre fairly comfortable, try to improvise using the same concepts, simply start by making small variations to the original solo.  And of course, if you havent already, seek out an experienced instructor who can give you essential feedback about how to play guitar solos like these listed below and keep you from making fundamental mistakes. Four Guitar Solos You Should Study The Eagles Hotel California This is my personal favorite of the four. Since the progression doesnt stay in the same key, you are forced to take a more chord based approach.  And although there are still plenty of great B minor blues licks to be found, there is also a healthy dose of major pentatonics, played using fairly tricky compound bending techniques commonly used by country guitarists. On top of this, the F#7 chord adds a darker flavor, which is nicely addressed in the solo with some harmonic minor licks.  Last but not least, theres the harmonized arpeggio outro, which is great to expand your fretboard knowledge, so be sure to learn both parts!  In terms of guitar tone, its a pretty straight forward approach. Most guitars played into a somewhat overdriven amp will sound great. Led Zeppelin Stairway to Heaven Jimmy Page was heavily influenced by American blues and rock and roll guitarists, which can be heard in the many great blues licks demonstrated here.  Be sure to pay close attention to the dynamic build up, his vibrato, and timing.  Page was known for using Gibson Les Pauls, SG doublenecks, and Fender Telecasters into either big Marshall stacks or low wattage combo amplifiers, so any tube overdriven lead sound will do. Try to add some delay to help with the sustain. Guns Roses Sweet Child O Mine First off, it should be noted that this was originally recorded with the guitar tuned down a half step (Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb). Even though it is in the key of Eb minor technically, it feels like E because of the tuning. This guitar solo actually consists of two shorter solos and a long outro. The slower, more melodic middle solos in Eb minor are a great opportunity to venture out of the familiar box at the 12th fret, and explore the area around the 7th.  The outro solo is a series of well executed pentatonic blues ideas via a tricky harmonic minor lick in the buildup- all while using a wah pedal. On the recording, Slash used a custom built Les Paul copy into a modified 70s Marshall amplifier, but any dual humbucker equipped guitar into a Marshall-esque sounding amp will work.  Try using the neck pickup for the melodic parts, and switch to the bridge pickup for the more aggressive sounding climax, together with the wah wah. Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb This solo is a great way to develop your sustain and vibrato because of the slower tempo, which really works well with David Gilmours melodic lead playing.  Although his playing is largely pentatonic based there are some tasteful notes from the minor scale thrown in, together with some great bends and tremolo arm tricks.  David Gilmour is known for using fairly elaborate setups, but the essentials to get his sound for this song would be a Stratocaster-style guitar with a tremolo into a relatively saturated/compressed fuzz or distortion pedal (he often used an Electro Harmonix Big Muff), into a clean amp via some delay. There are obviously plenty of other solos out there which would make good examples, but it is essential that they consist of memorable and coherent phrases.  Some other suggestions would include Ozzy Osbournes No More Tears, Thin Lizzys Dancing in the Moonlight, Jimi Hendrixs All Along the Watchtower, Deep Purples Highway Star, and Lynyrd Skynyrds Free Bird. Learning how to play guitar solos can be tricky, so whichever solo you choose, be sure to learn it inside-out (any capable guitar teacher should be able to assist you), and be open to critique from the people around you. Most importantly, use your ears and dont simply rely on effects to make sure it sounds its best! Good luck! Nils B. teaches guitar,  ear training, and  music theory  in Los Angeles, CA. He attended various schools for his training, including the  Musicians Institute in Hollywood. Nils has been teaching students since 2002.  Learn more about Nils here! Interested in Private Lessons? Subtraction within 1000

Subtraction within 1000 There are different mathematical operations in math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Subtraction is of the basic and prominent mathematical operation used in every branch of math and life in general. Subtraction is denoted by the sign -and is also called as difference. Subtraction means difference or the amount by which the total quantity is reduced. In subtraction the order in which the numbers are subtracted is very important. If the order of the numbers is changed the answer also changes. Hence subtraction is not commutative or associative. Example 1: Subtract the following numbers and find the answer: 792 - 561? Solution: Given are two numbers 792 and 561 which are both within 1000. Subtracting the numbers 792 + 561. First the ones place is subtracted 2 - 1 = 1. Now subtracting the tens place of the given numbers 9 - 6 = 1. Then subtracting the hundreds place of the numbers = 7 5 = 2. Hence the subtraction of: 792 - 561 = 211. Question: Multiple choice question (Pick the correct option.) What is the difference when the two numbers 695 and 382 are subtracted? a) 313 b) 963 c) 343 d) None of these. Correct answer: option a. Explanation: Here the two numbers 695 and 382 are given. Subtracting the ones place 5 - 2 = 3. Subtracting the tens place 9 - 8 = 1. Adding the hundreds place 6 - 3 = 3. Hence, subtracting the numbers 695 - 382 = 313.

3 Key Components of a Good MBA Application

3 Key Components of a Good MBA Application GMAT MBA Admissions Blog Applying to business school is an extremely competitive process. Top schools such as Harvard Business School, Stanford Graduate School of Business, and Wharton hold applicants to high standards, so putting together a good application is key. The three key components of a good MBA application are: a strong academic profile, work experience, and a compelling answer to why you are applying to MBA programs. A Strong Academic Profile Your academic profile is the first impression you will make on an admissions officer. A good GPA, strong GMAT or GRE, and competitive undergraduate institution, will put you in a good place. Your GPA is an indicator of how well you perform in a traditional academic setting, and admissions officers will look to this number as evidence of your ability to succeed in business school. If you have certain concerns with your GPA or transcript, such as a drop in grades one semester, or a slow start at the beginning of college, these are points you can address in an addendum. That being said, the addendum should be used to explain extenuating circumstances, such as a drop in grades one semester due to a death in the family, or something of that nature. Using this additional information section to explain these sorts of situationsâ€"without making excusesâ€"can be a good way to shed light on your GPA or transcript. The GMAT or GRE are thought of as indicators of how well you will succeed in your first year in business school. For students coming from non-business-related majors, the GMAT is a good opportunity to display your aptitude at quantitative skills, if you are lacking those in your academic background. Applying from a competitive, undergraduate school will also help your chances at top MBA programs, especially if you performed well at that school. That being said, your GPA, GMAT, and undergraduate school are simply the first means of evaluation. Once you meet a certain academic threshold for schools, it becomes a matter of standing out in comparison to applicants with similar qualifications. Good Work Experience Good work experience is a major point of evaluation for MBA schools. Unless you are applying directly out of undergrad through a program such as Harvard’s 2+2, you will need a strong resume. If you are coming from a more traditional finance or consulting background, then you should think about ways in which your work experience has differed from your peers. Have you led individual projects? Have you recently been promoted to a managerial role? Have you displayed leadership and initiative in your recent jobs? An upward, promotional trajectory is something top MBA programs look for on applicants’ resumes. Your letters or recommendation should speak to your leadership and initiative in the workplace. Make sure that your recommenders can draw on concrete examples of how you were a changemaker at your job, and how you will continue to impact the business world following your MBA degree. An Answer to: Why are you pursuing an MBA? Many students apply to business school to simply “get ahead.” Yet, admissions offices are looking to admit students who will use their MBA degree in impactful, meaningful ways. This means that as you write your business school essay, you should consider this question of why are you pursuing an MBA degree? You want to be able to tell a compelling, cohesive, and unique story through your application. Let’s say, for example, you have been working at an Investment Bank for the past few years and have been a leader in your specific division, but that your true passion is in sports technology. Maybe you played a Division I sport in college, and you have continued that interest by running in marathons or volunteering to coach a youth basketball team. Now, you need an MBA in order to transition your past leadership skills into this new field, in which you plan to start your own company. This is a compelling answer to “why I need an MBA.” It also brings work experience, academic interests, extracurricular activities, and future goals together in a cohesive way. As you work on your MBA applications, think about what makes you a unique applicant. Formulate your application around this persona. Your academic background may qualify you for top schools like HBS or GSB. But the story you tell about your work experience and your goals for the future may be the ultimate, deciding factor.
